HerSound.org is a non-profit organization created to provide need-based scholarships to get more females out on stage and shredding on the guitar.
My name is Bria and I am 17 years old. I started playing the guitar with traditional lessons at age 8 and honestly never wanted to practice. Playing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" wasn't very exciting for me. I still wanted to play the guitar but wanted to play like what I heard on the radio. My parents signed me up for the School of Rock program and it changed everything. I was taking lessons but was also playing in a real band and playing real venues. As I progressed, I noticed there were not as many girls as boys who were playing the guitar.
I say, “Girls can shred just as hard on guitar as guys! More girls just need the opportunity and access!" That is what HerSound.org is all about!
My parents will tell you stories of how when I first started, I was shy and hid in the back corner of the stage. Music has changed my life. I went from that shy girl who was too afraid to step out front and turn my amp up, to a girl who can say that she has played the guitar at amazing venues like B B Kings on Beale Street in Memphis, TN and Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, CA. This past summer my bandmates and I got to play at Rock in Rio in Lisbon, Portugal! These opportunities came about because of my time at School of Rock. I was lucky my parents were able to afford the costly tuition. A blessing- I know! Now that I will be aging out the program, I want to pass this gift on to other girls who have the passion to rock on long after me.
When I tell people I am in a band, most people always assume I am a singer. No shade to our killer female vocalists- but I am a guitarist. I started to look around more closely and realized how wide my island was. There are not too many of us- especially playing rock. I want there to be more females out there shredding it on the guitar. Lack of access shouldn’t deprive the world of more female guitarists. HerSound.org helps girls who may not be able to afford the equipment, or the lessons needed to someone who had the dream to take the stage. This financial need-based scholarship program will provide the equipment and fund lessons for awardees for 1 calendar year.
My bandmates and I had the opportunity to go on tour this summer. Here is a little footage of us playing at Fitgerald's in Chicago.
